For this essay I am going to be looking and researching into more depth about how most, if not all education systems are political. I will be looking at different theories such as Freire’s ‘banking’ and how this can be prevented with a solid pedagogy and what I think of this. I will speak about the oppressed and the oppressor and their role in liberation. I will also be reviewing A.S.Neill’s philosophy of Summerhill School and my thought critically about this. I will state over this essay what he did at Summerhill to get the results that he did and how it happened. I will briefly talk about Dave Hickey – The Invisible Dragon, a part of the text that I can relate to and find the most intriguing. Firstly in terms of pedagogy, Freire was best known for his theory called ‘banking’ which was how he viewed the concept of education, what he meant by ‘banking’ was that students are viewed as empty accounts waiting to be filled with the knowledge from the teachers. Freire feels that this is unacceptable as civic education, as students are asked to memorize and repeat ideas, phrases and formulas without actually understanding the meaning behind these. I feel that this is the case in most educational aspects, as it links back to politics and the government as the teachers are pushed to get a certain amount of grades and targets out of these students, so in that case they begin to fill them with all the knowledge they know to get them to this expectation.
